SEAFF 2017 | PATAREI PRISON

During the period of 1920-2002 Patarei (Tallinn, Estonia) was a prison. Until quite recently you could visit the empty rooms. These spaces are explored, in the film, by a naive, bouncing, tennis ball.
The idea of this artistic “performance” was to relate the architecture spaces of a prison.

Ricard Carbonell has a PhD in cinema from the Complutense University of Madrid, has diplomas from the universities of Barcelona, ECAM Madrid and Microobert (Barcelona). Today he is teaching Cinema at TAI Cinema School (R.J.C. University) in Madrid.

C-5-11 is a visual contemplation around Matter and Energy. Mind and Spirit. Science and Magic.

Edward Morin received an MFA from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, and a BFA from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Edward Ramsay-Morin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. His films have been screened at festivals and galleries in over 50 events in 11 countries. In 2016 SEAFF screened his film Lithics.

SEAFF 2017 | ANALYSIS PARALYSIS

Anton’s head is bursting with thoughts. The gardener is seething with anger: who has trampled her flower beds? In the park Anton is looking for someone to play chess with. For someone who plays a better game than his dog. The gardener is looking for a mysterious serial vandal who has lost a yellow boot. But what if both of them are looking for the same thing?

This film about Anton and his complicated mind and swelling head has already been awarded in festivals around Europe; the Animated Grand Prix Award at Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival among many others. It is an animated mix of digital cut-out and drawings on paper.
Anete Melece is a Latvian illustrator and animation flmmaker based in Zürich, Switzerland. She studied visual communication at the Art Academy of Latvia (BA) and animation at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Art (MA).

Today is the day. Felix is struggling.

Felix: “And she doesn’t seem to hate herself as much as the other people in the store!”
Felix: “Oh shit….”
Felix: “Okay Felix, today it’s happening. And tomorrow, who knows. So get out there in the car”

Deepti Menon is an Indian American filmmaker, currently residing in New York. Her work is often colorful, character driven, and light hearted. Deepti graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Film/Animation/Video.

SEAFF 2017 | LUCY

Lucy is the story about a boy who visits a paleologic expo with his absent-minded parents. Then the 4-million-year-old Lucy comes alive. The computer animated film Lucy was premiered and screened in the grand competition at Animafest Zagreb 2015.

Evert de Beijer studied graphic design at the Graphic School and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam where he became interested in photography and animated filmmaking. In 2011 (In the context of the ‘Filme im Schloss’ Animated Film Festival) Evert was awarded the Prize of the City of Wiesbaden for his artistic and innovative contribution to animated film.

SEAFF 2017 | BATFISH SOUP

Batfish Soup is a fictionalized absurdist film based on memories of freakish childhood visitations with grandparents. Violence, senseless fear, and play become indistinguishable as the characters dance their way through the evening. Wacky relatives give way to mounting tensions with broken dolls, boiling stew and a bang.

Amanda Bonaiuto received her BFA in fine art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2012. She is now an MFA candidate in the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts, expected to graduate in 2018. Her work has screened in many festivals, including: Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Stuttgart Festival of Animated Films, Ottawa International Animation festival and more.

The End is a film that use the animated language to turn expectations on reality around and give us a glimt of how the end of the world might turn out to be like, quite funny.

Mykyta Lys’kov studied art at Dnipropetrovsk Art College and design at Dnipropetrovsk National University, Ukraine.

SEAFF 2017 | AURELIA

An enigmatic fantasy mystery that takes a journey to reveal some secrets of the city at night were a young girls story of an unusual phenomenon to which her life is bound: a worldwide jelly-fish invasion.

This intricately designed sci-fi/fantasy animation has been awarded the prize of Athens International Film Festival and was nominated for the award of the Greek Film Academy.
Christos Bourandas studied architecture at NTUA. In recent years, he has worked with digital media as a 3D designer, animator and filmmaker. Kreon Krionas is a self-taught animator/designer with a creative background in short graphic stories, software programming and synth music. His has a passion for art and digital technologies and in the recent years he has been experimenting with animation techniques that combine rotoscoping, CGI and traditional animation.

SEAFF 2017 | KILLER RECIPE

An avocado, who is a scientist, inadvertently invents tortilla chips that want to eat him. His tomato friend helps him destroy and dispose of the menace. But his creation proves to be resilient… and hungry.

Chadwick Whitehead draws, animates, makes prints and plays songs. He studied picture-making in Chicago, Tokyo and New York. He received a BA from Columbia College Chicago (cinematography and animation) in 2000. In 2006, he received an MFA in Illustration as a Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

SEAFF 2017 | MAHONIE

The animated film Mahonie visualize a bizarre world where the characters consisting of cabinets have their own language. We follow their absurdities. After a while we even begin to understand their lingo and their world.

Emily Lefebvre graduated with a Master in Audiovisual Arts degree from the School of Arts Ghent / KASK (2016). Her first film MAHONIE garnered a selection for the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France (2016) and is currently touring various film festivals around the world.
